As stated on the UCL website, ‘UCL Special Collections is home to over 100,000 rare books, pamphlets and periodicals, dating from the fifteenth century to the present day’. The Scandinavian Studies Rare Books – made up of 71 boxes catalogued mostly according to languages (General and Greenlandic, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Celtic) – are one of the sections of this larger collection.
They encompass history books, grammars, dictionaries, illustrated travel books, literary texts dating from the seventeenth-century onwards. Many of these books were acquired from bequests by individuals and larger organisations as shown by the labels displayed here.
